Burgundy, a mosaic of flavours



Afternoon arrival at Montbard TGV Station, met by our local guide. Departure by coach to Fontenay Abbey, a complete and unique Cistercian church built in 1114…

Continue on to Vézelay, exploring the Cure River Valley (famous caves and castle built on the cliff).

Lunch in Vézelay, at the bottom of the “Eternal Hill”

Visit to Vézelay – site of the first step of the Second Crusade led by Bernard Clarvaux.

In the early afternoon, a visit to the Basilique Sainte-Madeleine, a Roman masterpiece and one of the main steps on the Compostela Road. If you are lucky enough to visit during the summer solstice (June 24), you will see the magnificent light passing through the nave. This is the time when the basilica is in perfect correspondence with the stars …

Continue on to Beaune, passing through Avallon, the old home of Vauban (Minister of Louis 14th).
Accommodation tonight at a 3 star hotel in a double room, includes dinner.


Departure after breakfast by coach with our local guide to Dijon on the Route de Grands Crus. Near Nuits-Saint-Georges, a visit to a Red berry farm which produces the famous « Crème de Cassis » (Black Current liquor) as well as jam, ketchup, butter…

Continuing on this road we will stop at Vougeot to visit the Château du Clos de Vougeot,. This chateau was originally a vineyard and was built in the 12th century by monks from nearby Citeaux Abbey. The Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin bought the Château in 1945, and started to restore it, turning it into the seat of the Order of Chevaliers du Tastevin.

Lunch in a typical local restaurant.

Guided Tour of Dijon with the theme of « Dukes of Burgundy and the Middle Ages ».

Visit to Cîteaux Abbey. We will meet the monks who produce the abbey’s famous cheese. Return to Beaune.
Overnight accommodation in a double room with dinner.


After breakfast, a guided visit to the Hôtel-Dieu, an original Burgundian monument constructed by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor of the Dukes of Burgundy and his wife Guigogne de Salins.

Guided visit through the wonderful old streets of Beaune, visiting gardens, and a chance to do some shopping ….
Wine-tasting lunch at Château de Cîteaux, at Meursault, followed by a walk of discovery through the famous vineyards, terroir and landscapes of Burgundy. Wine-tasting in Puligny-Montrachet.

Visit to the village of Saint-Romain, one of France’s most unique archeological sites… Return to Beaune.
Overnight accommodation in a double room, with dinner.


Departure after breakfast to Tournus with a visit to San-Philibert Abbey.

We will continue along the Wine Route to Cluny discovering Chapaize and its lovely roman church, and Brancion, with its medieval fortress, typical of Southern Burgundy.

Visit to Château de Cormatin built in 1605. This is a very well preserved chateau set in a 12 hectare park, dating back to the reign of Louis XIII. It is noted for its beautiful gilded halls. Lunch in Cluny.

A visit to the ancient Abbey of Cluny, which, in its day, was larger than St. Peter’s in Rome.

At the end of the day, transfer to the TGV station at Macon Loche.
